My Background and Current Business
I started working in the jewelry industry in 1984 for award winning designer Susan
Machamer in Syracuse & Cazenovia NY. After that, I worked for various retail
stores in the central NY area.
In 1991, I relocated to Los Angeles. I spent ten years working at the European
Gemological Laboratory performing research, diamond grading and gem
identification.
In 2001, I became the staff gemologist for Nova By Gruber. The high-end
mounting manufacturer led by another award winning designer, Marty Gruber.
From 2003 to 2006, I managed the Los Angeles office for Stuller Settings. Stuller
is one of the largest jewelry manufacturers in the world.
As of May '07, I have successfully moved to Northern California. I have set up a
lapidary studio here and now I plan to spend the rest of my life being a
long-haired, reclusive artist.
During the last 20 years, I have earned two degrees in Gemology: Graduate
Gemologist (GG) from the Gemological Institute of America and Fellowship of the
Gemmological Association (FGA) from the Gemmological Association of Great
Britain. I have also learned (self taught) to facet and carve gemstones.
Most colored stones are cut with only one thing in mind...maximum weight yield
from the rough crystal. I employ exceptional symmetry and polish in order to obtain
as much color and brilliance as possible from every stone cut. Beauty, not carat
weight, is the goal.
My finished jewelry pieces are all made by master goldsmith Sevan Avakian GG.
He does exceptional work in all precious metals.
